Official Rules

By purchasing, accessing, downloading, or participating in any Compass & Lantern treasure hunt, all participants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and any future updates thereto.

1. Eligibility

Participation is open to individuals who are legally permitted to participate under applicable laws and regulations.

To be eligible to claim a prize, the claimant must be the registered purchaser of the corresponding Compass & Lantern hunt associated with the treasure being claimed.

Compass & Lantern reserves the right to verify eligibility, ownership, and compliance with these Official Rules before awarding any prize.

2. No Refunds

All purchases are final.

Due to the digital nature of Compass & Lantern hunt materials, no refunds, exchanges, transfers, credits, or cancellations will be issued once a purchase has been completed.

3. Treasure Locations

Compass & Lantern treasures are hidden and never buried.

Participants are never required to dig, excavate, damage property, disturb natural resources, alter terrain, or otherwise impact the environment in order to locate a treasure.

Compass & Lantern treasures are placed in publicly accessible locations with appropriate permissions.

Participants must obey all posted rules, signs, regulations, closures, and restrictions applicable to any location they visit.

4. Trespassing Prohibited

Treasures will never be intentionally hidden on a persons private property. All treasures are hidden in publicly accessible locations with the appropriate permissions. Participants are strictly prohibited from trespassing on private property or entering restricted, closed, hazardous, or prohibited areas. If a participant chooses to enter any such area, they do so entirely at their own risk and may be disqualified from the hunt.

5. Participant Conduct

Compass & Lantern reserves the sole and absolute right to disqualify any participant whose conduct violates these Official Rules or compromises the integrity, safety, or fairness of a treasure hunt.

Prohibited conduct includes, but is not limited to:

  • Tampering with any aspect of a treasure hunt.

  • Attempting to manipulate or interfere with the operation of a hunt.

  • Providing false information during the claim process.

  • Engaging in fraud, deception, or dishonest conduct.

  • Harassing, threatening, intimidating, or abusing other participants.

  • Violating any federal, state, or local law.

  • Damaging public or private property.

  • Disturbing wildlife, vegetation, historical sites, or natural resources.

  • Entering restricted, prohibited, or unsafe areas.

  • Attempting to gain an unfair advantage through unauthorized means.

Any participant found to be in violation of these rules may be disqualified without refund.

6. Leave It As You Found It

Compass & Lantern maintains a strict "Leave It As You Found It" policy.

Participants shall not:

  • Dig or excavate.

  • Damage or remove vegetation.

  • Alter the landscape.

  • Damage or remove public property.

  • Damage or remove private property.

  • Leave trash, markers, or debris behind.

  • Disturb wildlife or environmentally sensitive areas.

Participants are expected to leave all locations in the same condition in which they were found.

7. Safety

Participant safety is important to Compass & Lantern.

Treasures are intended to be placed in locations that do not require specialized equipment, technical climbing, rappelling, swimming, or other inherently dangerous activities.

However, participants are solely responsible for their own actions, decisions, safety, travel, and compliance with applicable laws.

Participants should exercise reasonable judgment and caution at all times.

If a location appears unsafe, participants should immediately discontinue their search.

8. Prize Redemption and Verification

To claim a treasure, the claimant must contact Compass & Lantern at:

treasureseekers@compassandlantern.net

The claimant must provide:

  • The unique serial number located on the back of the treasure coin.

  • Proof of identity if requested (will be needed for tax form)

  • All prize claims are subject to verification:

    • Proof of book/PDF purchase will be verified.

  • Possession of a treasure coin alone does not guarantee entitlement to a prize. You must be a book/PDF purchaser/player. Only a player can win!  Compass & Lantern reserves the right to deny any claim that cannot be satisfactorily verified (if not a book/PDF owner, the treasure claim will be denied)

9. Official Winner

Only one (1) person may be recognized as the official winner of any Compass & Lantern treasure hunt.

Participants may search individually or as part of a team. However, Compass & Lantern will award the prize solely to the verified claimant who satisfies all eligibility requirements.

Any division of prize proceeds among teammates or other individuals is solely the responsibility of the winner.

10. Taxes

Prize winners are solely responsible for any federal, state, local, or other taxes associated with a prize.

Where required by law, winners must complete and submit applicable tax documentation, including IRS Form W-9 or similar reporting forms, before a prize is awarded.

Compass & Lantern reserves the right to withhold prize payment until all required documentation has been received.

11. Changes, Suspension, and Cancellation

Compass & Lantern reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to modify, update, suspend, postpone, relocate, or cancel any hunt, rule, procedure, prize amount, website content, participation requirement, or other aspect of a treasure hunt at any time.

Reasons for such action may include, but are not limited to:

  • Safety concerns

  • Restricted access to a location

  • Changes in land use or regulations

  • Severe weather or natural disasters

  • Fraudulent activity or cheating

  • Technical issues

  • Legal or regulatory requirements

  • Circumstances beyond Compass & Lantern's reasonable control

If a material change becomes necessary, Compass & Lantern will make reasonable efforts to notify participants through official communication channels.

Compass & Lantern shall not be responsible for any travel expenses, lodging expenses, time invested, or other costs incurred by participants.

12. Assumption of Risk / Limitation of Liability

Participation in a treasure hunt involves inherent risks.

By participating, each participant voluntarily assumes all risks associated with participation, including travel, walking, hiking, outdoor activities, weather conditions, terrain conditions, wildlife encounters, and other foreseeable or unforeseeable risks.
